Gum grafting

State-of-the-art care

Gums act as a protective shield around your teeth and their roots. They act as a bulwark against bacteria and pathogens that could damage your dental structures. However, when gingival recession (receding gums) occurs, they can expose tooth roots and lead to increased sensitivity, as well as impairing the overall appearance of your smile.

Why use gum grafts?

When gums can no longer fulfill their role as a shield, gum grafting may be recommended. This procedure involves removing a small piece of healthy gum tissue, usually from the roof of the mouth, and transplanting it into areas where the gums have receded. It is relevant for restoring tooth protection, reducing sensitivity and improving the aesthetics of your smile. Gum grafts are therefore a valuable solution for maintaining oral health.

The different types of gum grafts

There are several types of gum graft, each tailored to specific needs. The main types include :

Free gingival graft: In this procedure, a piece of gingiva is removed from an area of the palate, then transplanted into the region where reduced gingiva is to be restored.

Connective tissue graft: A thin layer of connective tissue is removed from beneath the gum tissue on the palate and grafted to the recipient area. This technique is often used to treat more complex cases of gingival recession.

Alloderm graft: This cutting-edge technique eliminates the need to harvest a graft from the palate. Instead, a piece of collagen is used. This technique reduces the post-operative pain associated with palatal grafting, and allows several teeth or sites to be grafted at once.

The choice of graft depends on the severity of the gingival recession, the location of the affected area and the patient's specific aesthetic needs. Your Vaudreuil-Dorion dentist will determine the most appropriate type of graft for your case.

Alloderm grafting: a state-of-the-art technique for our patients

Alloderm Grafting is an additional option for patients who do not have sufficient connective tissue on the palate, or for those who dread or want to avoid the step of harvesting the graft from the palate, which can cause post-operative pain. In this case, the graft comes from an external donor. However, the tissue has been processed to remove all donor cells. All that remains is a collagen matrix, which effectively restores height and thickness to the gum tissue.

With the Alloderm technique, there is very little risk of rejection. What's more, aesthetic results are equivalent or even superior to those associated with other gum grafting techniques.
