Orthodontic Treatments

Contrary to the belief of some, orthodontic treatment goes far beyond straightening teeth for an improved smile and self-confidence. In fact, orthodontic treatment can help prevent:

• Gum and bone diseases
• Abnormal wear, cracks and broken teeth
• Pain in the Jaw
• Difficulty chewing
• Speech difficulties

As a preventive measure, the Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontist by the age of 7. In some cases, it is recommended as early as 3 or 4. The idea behind this is to detect problems early before the jaw development begins to slow down. The earlier that a problem is identified and treatment started, the easier it will be to perform and complete corrective treatment.

A treatment for every stage

In orthodontics, there are two types of treatment: phase I and phase II. Phase I treatment is also known as “early interceptive treatment“. This type of treatment consists typically of a fixed or removable appliance or partial braces to help correct an uneven jaw position or inadequate space. An example of Phase I treatment is oral expansion with an appliance to create more space in the dental arch by expanding the palate. This type of treatment comes before Phase II treatment and the duration is variable dependant on the desired result.

Phase II treatment consists of brackets and wires and is the most commonly recognized type of orthodontic treatment. Braces consist of small brackets that are fixed to the teeth, linked together with a wire and then held into place by metal or elastic ties. Here at Passion Sourire, we use Damon Brand braces which are both comfortable and effective.

While having orthodontic treatment, it is extremely important to keep up good oral hygiene to avoid other potential problems such as gingivitis. Even though home hygiene doesn’t become easier during treatment, optimal mouth health and hygiene is possible. Our team of dentists and hygienists can show you exactly who to clean that are removable or fixed and how to properly floss and brush around brackets and wires.

If you are looking for a more discreet alternative to the wires and brackets of traditional braces, here at Passion Sourire we are pleased to offer our patients Invisalign treatment using custom clear aligners.
