The need to suckle is a normal reflex for babies. Breastfeeding is not only a way for babies to feed but is a way for them to relax and unwind as well. As your child grows, they may still look to replicate this feeling by using a pacifier or by sucking their thumb.
But did you know that using a pacifier is recommended over having a child suck their thumb?
Why this ?
- Because it is easier to control when your child stops the habit.
- And because adults can limit access to the pacifier as opposed to your child`s thumb.
However, when it comes to using a pacifier, it is recommended to have your child weened of the pacifier before the age of three. A child should not continue to suck their thumb or use a pacifier once their adult teeth begin to come in. This is because problems related to jaw development, teeth positioning and speech and language difficulties may arise. It is also important to note that even if a pacifier is labeled as “Orthodontic“, problems with Jaw development and tooth positioning can still arise just as with an ordinary pacifier.
