Follow up Care at Home

After a Gum Graft

It is important to follow the instructions below to speed healing. Note that some discomfort and swelling are normal after a gum graft.

Day of the procedure

  • Apply ice to your cheek at regular intervals (10 minutes of ice every hour).
  • If bleeding occurs, you must apply pressure to the wound with a humid gauze pad or lightly moistened tea bag for 30 minutes.

Don'ts :

  • Don’t touch the dressing that was placed on the operated areas
  • Don't rinse your mouth or spit: this may dilute/dislodge the blood clot and cause bleeding.
  • Don't drink through a straw, this may dislodge the blood clot that promotes healing.
  • Don’t rinse to stop the bleeding, this will increase it!
  • Don't smoke or drink alcohol
  • Don't consume hot foods or beverages. Eat cold, soft foods. Wait for the anesthetic to wear off befor you eat.
  • Don’t brush the operated area until told differently.
  • Don't engage in intense physical activity. You must rest.
  • Don’t lay flat, sleep with two or three pillows

Pain

  • For pain relief in the first 24 to 72 hours, take acetaminophen (Tylenol, Atasol), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or the medication you were prescribed as directed. Don't take aspirin.

The day after until full healing

  • Rinse your mouth three times a day with a warm salt water solution (½ tsp of salt in 250 ml or 1 cup of water).
  • Chew on the opposite side of the operated area
  • Use warm compresses to reduce swelling

You may notice:

  • If a dressing was placed on the operated area, it will be removed at the same time as your stitches at your follow-up visit. If the dressing is lost, some bleeding may occur, control the bleeding by applying pressure to the wound with a humid gauze pad.
  • There may be some bruising of the skin. This will disappear in five to seven days.
  • You may have trouble opening your mouth wide. This should diminish in four to five days.
  • You may taste the taste of blood for a few days.
  • If you were prescribed antibiotics, please take the full regimen even if you feel better. Discontinue use if diarrhea appears.
You will feel better after a few days and can resume your normal activities. If you experience heavy bleeding, pain increasing after the first three days, continued increased swelling, a negative reaction to the medication, or are concerned about your healing, please call us at (450) 510-2323.
